Getting Started with Opening Study
Begin with one opening as White (we recommend 1.e4 or 1.d4) and learn two defenses as Black - one against 1.e4 and one against 1.d4. Focus on understanding the key ideas and typical plans rather than memorizing long variations. As you improve, gradually expand your repertoire.
Opening Principles
1. Develop Your Pieces
Bring your knights and bishops into the game before moving the same piece twice. Castle early to secure your king.
2. Control the Center
Place pawns on e4, d4, e5, or d5. Central control provides space and limits your opponent's options.
3. Don't Move the Same Piece Twice
In the opening, efficiency is key. Each move should contribute to your development and position.
4. Castle Early
Get your king to safety, typically by move 10. This also connects your rooks.
5. Don't Bring Your Queen Out Too Early
The queen is vulnerable to attacks from minor pieces. Develop knights and bishops first.
