...Nf6 Development

1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2 Nf6

Instead of committing to ...d6 or ...d5, Black develops the knight and keeps flexibility. White usually answers by developing with tempo and keeping the position open.

Typical Play

White

Nf3, 0-0, Qb3

Bring pieces out quickly and create threats. Every tempo matters in gambit openings.

Black

...Be7, ...0-0, ...d6

Don't get greedy. If you can castle and neutralize White's initiative, you can be simply up material.

Key Tactic

...Nxe4

Black can sometimes grab the e4 pawn as well, but must be ready for activity on open files.

Common Pitfalls

For White: If you play quietly after 0-0, Black simply consolidates and the extra pawns decide.

For Black: If you grab too many pawns and fall behind in development, the bishops can become dangerous fast.

Development Is Everything

This variation is a pure development race: Black tries to consolidate; White tries to attack before that happens.
