Nimzowitsch Attack

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 3.Nxe5 Qf6 4.d4

The most principled way to meet the Latvian. White accepts the pawn sacrifice (and often more), then uses d4 to build a center and limit Black's tactics. Black usually responds by attacking the knight and trying to open lines quickly.

Core Ideas

White

Nc4, Bd3, 0-0

Keep the extra pawn(s) only if it doesn't cost development. Often the best plan is to consolidate and trade pieces.

Black

...d6 and ...fxe4

Attack the e5 knight and open the center. Black needs activity to justify the early kingside weakening.

Key Detail

Don't get greedy

White should be ready to return material if it keeps the king safe and the center stable.

Common Pitfalls

For White: If you delay development, Black's initiative becomes dangerous and tactical.

For Black: If you fail to open lines, the weakened kingside can become a long-term liability.

Play for the Center

Against the Latvian, solid central play and timely development are the most reliable route to advantage.
